On April 23, 2024, in Tactic, Alta Verapaz, a group of mothers received training from Yussel Cortantes, a COMUSAN facilitator who took part in the Diploma Program on Communication for Social and Behavior Change.
The program, supported by UNICEF and funded by the European Union, is part of Guatemala’s national strategy to address chronic malnutrition, a condition that affects nearly 50% of children under the age of five, limiting their growth, development, and future opportunities. For Yussel, the diploma opened an entirely new world of possibilities, equipping her with communication tools to promote healthy practices around nutrition, hygiene, and responsive caregiving in her community.
She is now one of more than 650 trained individuals who are applying what they learned to educate and support families across rural and Indigenous communities in Guatemala, helping to strengthen local knowledge and build a culture of care from the ground up.
