STORYLINE / BLURB:
On 25 August 2025, in Gaza City, UNICEF supported the screening and treatment of children with acute malnutrition, in Friends of the Patient Society Hospital. Children suffering from moderate and severe acute malnutrition received Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). Hospitals, already overwhelmed with trauma cases, are struggling to cope. Children like Jana, 9 years old, highlight the compounded crisis: Jana’s survival is threatened by hunger and lack of treatment. Her sister, Joury, died only weeks ago from acute malnutrition — a devastating reminder that children’s lives in Gaza are put at risk, not just by airstrikes, but also by the living conditions. In the Gaza Strip, the malnutrition crisis has reached catastrophic levels. The entire child population under five — over 320,000 children — is at risk of acute malnutrition. In July alone, 13,000 children were identified as acutely malnourished, the highest monthly figure ever recorded, representing more than a 500 per cent increase since the start of the year.
SHOTLIST/TRANSCRIPT:
Tess Ingram, UNICEF spokesperson script:
00:00:00:05 - 00:00:02:03
I'm just shocked by what's happened this morning.
00:00:02:03 - 00:00:06:25
I've come into a hospital, intensive care unit, and met Jana,
00:00:07:00 - 00:00:11:23
who I met 15 months ago
when she had severe acute malnutrition
00:00:11:23 - 00:00:14:09
in the very north of Gaza Strip at Kamal Adwan Hospital.
00:00:14:09 - 00:00:16:29
And that day, we managed to medically evacuate her
00:00:16:29 - 00:00:19:27
to the south, where she received eight months
00:00:19:27 - 00:00:22:27
of treatment at a field hospital and got better.
00:00:23:08 - 00:00:28:10
She returned to the north with her mum,
and the conditions deteriorated.
00:00:28:22 - 00:00:30:16
And again, here we are.
00:00:30:16 - 00:00:35:25
And Jana has severe acute malnutrition
for the second time and urgently requires
00:00:35:25 - 00:00:38:25
a medical evacuation outside of Gaza in order to survive.
00:00:38:26 - 00:00:41:25
Doctors are incredibly concerned,
00:00:41:25 - 00:00:45:17
and so is the family because
they have already lost a child.
00:00:45:17 - 00:00:49:25
Jana's younger sister, Jouri,
died last month of acute malnutrition.
00:00:50:18 - 00:00:53:18
How is it that we are in this position
00:00:54:06 - 00:00:56:19
where a child like Jana
00:00:56:19 - 00:01:00:07
has to suffer twice, has to survive twice,
00:01:00:17 - 00:01:03:18
because the food and the nutrition
supplies and the treatments
00:01:03:18 - 00:01:06:27
that she so desperately needs
are not able to reach her?
00:01:10:12 - 00:01:14:17
How is it that we are in the position
where a child like Jana
00:01:14:17 - 00:01:16:23
has to suffer twice?
00:01:16:24 - 00:01:19:24
She has to survive these horrors twice.
00:01:19:26 - 00:01:22:04
We get the treatments in to save her life.
00:01:22:04 - 00:01:24:24
And yet, the condition remains so bad,
00:01:24:24 - 00:01:29:18
and the deprivation continues
to the extent that we are back here again.
00:01:30:03 - 00:01:31:12
This is unacceptable.
00:01:31:12 - 00:01:33:08
This is a shame on the world.
