On April 23, 2024, in Tactic, Alta Verapaz, a group of mothers participated in a training session led by a COMUSAN facilitator who had completed the Diploma Program on Communication for Social and Behavior Change.
This diploma program supported by UNICEF and funded by the European Union forms part of Guatemala’s national strategy to combat chronic malnutrition, a condition that affects nearly 50% of children under five, severely impacting their growth, development, and long-term potential.
For Yussel Cortantes, the COMUSAN facilitator, the program opened up a whole new world of possibilities. It equipped her with essential communication skills to promote healthy practices related to nutrition, hygiene, and responsive caregiving within her community.
Yussel is now one of more than 650 trained individuals across the country who are putting their knowledge into practice, working directly with families in rural and Indigenous communities. Their efforts are helping to strengthen local knowledge, improve child well-being, and foster a culture of care from the ground up.
